This is my Amos Alonzo Stagg award. It was awarded to those who walked 50 miles in less than 12 hours. I earned it by walking 50 miles in 10:48 actually. It was in answer to president John F. Kennedy's physical fitness challenge of 1962.
we carried 25lb. packs with water, food, raingear, extra socks etc. The first half of the hike was in perfect weather. The second half was in a cold drizzle and finished in darkness.
On Feb. 22, 1962 more than 100 participants began the hike. Only four finished. I was one.
I was 14 years old.
